Glossary: Israel, Zionism, Judaism, Antisemitism

The record
Israel is a country, a state founded in 1948. Judaism is a religion. Jewish identity can be religious, ethnic, cultural, or a combination, and many Jews are not religious.
Zionism is the political movement that sought, and now supports, a Jewish state in the historic Land of Israel. It contains a wide range of views, and supporters and critics of Israeli government policy exist among Jews and non-Jews alike.
Antisemitism is hostility, prejudice, or discrimination directed at Jews. It is distinct from criticism of a government, though the two can overlap.
Where criticism of Israel or of Zionism becomes antisemitism is a real and active dispute. The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's working definition includes examples involving Israel, such as holding Jews collectively responsible for Israel's actions or applying double standards to Israel. The Jerusalem Declaration on Antisemitism, published by a group of scholars in 2021 as an alternative, defines antisemitism as discrimination, prejudice, hostility, or violence against Jews as Jews and draws the line more narrowly. Governments, universities, and Jewish organizations have adopted different definitions.
The Command resolves this dispute by refusing to learn any of the words. That is the parody. The archive does not resolve the dispute either; it records that it exists.
